Pheasant is Square Cherry Productions’ biggest achievement to date!

Funded by BFI and YouBoy Films, Pheasant is a beautifully proud Northern English production, following the story of Martha, a mixed race London evacuee as she finds herself evacuated to a gamekeeper and his family in rural northern England. She forms an unlikely friendship with Enzo, and Italian POW working in the fields (based on true accounts) and their shared sense of displacement pulling them together but also unwittingly thrusting them into a world of suspicion and danger.

We got to know the local gamekeeper community quite well during the filming of this project, and they were endlessly kind and patient with us as we lugged gear and crew all over the countryside across the 2 days we were there. A few beaters volunteered to be on screen during a key scene where the children go out to help bring the pheasants out of hiding before a hunt. We had brought some shoes along for them to wear, but much to our delight they arrived in full period dress for the occasion!

We’re also delighted that the gamekeepers’ beautiful dog ended up with a key moment in the final film - she absolutely stole the show.
